Tracking Spending Assignment (Where did all my money go?)
CONS 2500 Spring 2024
20 points
This assignment will give you a glimpse at where your money is going. For the assignment, you
will be recording what you spend your money on for about one week – from Monday, February
5 at 12:01 a.m. (this is during the night when Sunday changes to Monday) through Sunday,
February 11 at midnight. You should divide your record into sections for Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Your assignment is due as part of your Module 4 assignments on Monday, February 12 at
midnight. Submit your assignment on Blackboard. Save your file as a .doc, .docx, .pdf or Excel
file. Upload your file to the submission area.
Record all purchases of goods and expenditures on services no matter how large or small.
Record what the purchase/expenditure is and the price. Also, record whether the
purchase/expenditure was a want or a need and whether it was a good or a service. In the
final column, indicate whether this was an impulse or planned purchase.
Remember that needs are things that you need for your body to survive and wants are things
that you desire. We have very few actual needs and many wants. Goods are tangible objects
that you can see and feel, and services are tangible actions that someone performs for you.
Impulse purchases are those that are made without taking the time to think about the
consequences, such as cost, benefits, values, or needs.
Include purchases you make using gift cards and purchases made using Bobcat Cash and your
Flex account if you are on campus. Do not include something that another person buys for you
spending their own money or use of your meal plan in the dining hall if you are in Athens. If
you are shopping for many items at a single store you do not need to list every purchased item
on the table. For example, if you went to the grocery store, you would not need to list each
item you purchased but could label the expense “groceries” and include the total dollar
amount.
Create a table in Word or Excel to record your spending. You will be submitting your final copy
through Blackboard.
If you do not make any purchases one or many of the days of the assignment, then note
under that day that you did not spend any money and put $0 in the dollar amount.

At the end of your chart, total up how much money you spent over the 7 days that you were
recording (add everything together to get the total).
An example is as follows:
