Summary/Critique of Article
Your essay should be one page in length (single spaced); the first half is a summary and the second half a critique. It should adhere to the following criteria:
Summary
In the first half of your paper, summarize the overall scope of the chosen article, including the author’s purpose and the main points of the article. Use your own words to summarize rather than relying on direct quotes. In this section, refrain from offering your opinion.
Questions to think about for the summary:
What is the author’s overall purpose?
What are the main points discussed in the work to support this purpose?
In the second half of your paper, which will be longer than the summary, offer your personal critique of the article. This should include a few different components, such as the logic offered for the position taken, the author’s assumptions, the methods the author used to reason, the style or tone and how that contributed to the effectiveness of the argument, the relevance and currency of the argument, and how successfully the author made their point.
Questions to think about for the critique:
What argument is the author trying to make?
Is the author’s point of view valid based on what you understand about organizational communication?
What made the argument strong/weak?
Do you agree with the author’s point of view? Why or why not?
What does the article contribute to your understanding of organizational communication?
What more would you like the author to have considered as part of the argument put forth?
